A Doordarshan cameraman was killed in an attack by Naxals in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada on Tuesday.

The crew of the national broadcaster was attacked in Dantewada’s Aranpur. DD cameraperson Achyutanand Sahu was injured during the attack and later succumbed to his injuries. Two security personnel were also martyred in the attack.

The crew was on the poll coverage in the area. ‘Today our patrolling party was ambushed by Naxals in Aranpur. Two of our personnel were martyred, and a DD cameraman was also injured and later succumbed. Two more personnel injured,’ DIG P Sundarraj was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

The poll-bound state has seen a spike in Naxal violence in recent times. On Sunday, a BJP leader was critically injured after he was attacked by suspected Naxals with sharp edged weapons in Dantewada.

The attack took place at around 8 pm when Nandal Mudiyami, a member of Dantewada Zila Panchayat, was at his house in Palnar village, Dantewada Additional Superintendent of Police Gorakhnath Baghel told PTI.

Soon after the incident, his relatives informed police and rushed him to Dantewada hospital, he said.

The ultras have called upon voters to boycott the assembly polls, scheduled to be held in two phases next month.

The first phase of polls will be held on November 12 covering 18 constituencies across eight Naxal-affected districts namely Bastar, Kanker Sukma, Bijapur, Dantewada, Narayanpur, Kondagaon and Rajnandgaon.

The remaining 72 constituencies will go to polls on November 20.

The counting of votes will be taken up on December 11.

The Congress alleges that the Modi dispensation at the Centre and the Raman Singh government in Chhattisgarh has failed to contain Naxal violence, saying the chief minister has forfeited his right to continue in power.

Terming demonetisation as a "brain child" of Narendra Modi, Abhieshk Manu Singhvi said the prime minister had claimed that the note ban exercise has effectively neutralised naxal and terror threats.

He said the figures available suggest otherwise as more security personnel and civilians were killed in naxal violence after note ban.
