A Trinamool Congress leader was shot at and critically injured in Titagarh on Monday. The victim, identified as Satish Mishra, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital on EM Bypass in Kolkata. His condition is reportedly critical, sources said.
Two persons have been arrested in this connection, an official from Titagarh police station said. “We have arrested Bhola Sardar and Kala Munna in this connection. We are trying to trace others involved in the incident. Prima facie we suspect the attack may be a result of political rivalry. It is being probed,” he added.
Satish was shot at by four to five assailants when he along with local TMC councillor Manish Shukla were standing outside a Kali Puja pandal, the official said.
“One bullet hit chest and he collapsed on the road. The miscreants fled away from the spot after the attack. Soon after the incident, angry locals attacked local BJP club and ransacked the furniture,” the police official added.
While TMC accused the BJP of attacking their worker, the saffron party denied the charge claiming that the incident is a fall out of factional feud within the ruling party.
“It is another case of their internal feud and yet again they have got an excuse to accuse BJP workers,” said BJP State President Dilip Ghosh.
Sources said that the victim is a close aide of local TMC MLA Arjun Singh. The MLA has allegedly claimed that Satish injured himself while trying to save Shukla, who according to Singh was the main target, sources added. “He was attacked by anti-social elements. Police are probing if any party is involved in the attack,” said TMC North 24 Parganas district president and minister Jyotipriyo Mullick.
“I want police to arrest the culprits,” said Usha Mishra, the mother of the victim.
