MADURAI: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has directed the Tamil Nadu government to issue Rs 3 lakh compensation to a man who was assaulted and harassed by the Salem police in 2013.
The commission issued the directions after the victim’s sister, M Dhanalakshmi, had filed a complaint.
According to the petitioner, her brother, Manjunathasmy, runs a photo studio in Keeripatti village in Attur taluk. She said the Thammampatty police had foisted false cases against her brother regularly and he was acquitted in most of them.
On January 11, 2013, inspector P Natraj along with two other policemen picked up Manjunathasamy and assaulted him in connection with a case. The petitioner alleged that police had assaulted him with an iron rod and a lathi and he was severely injured.
In response, the concerned police personnel submitted that they had picked him up in connection with a financial dispute with a person and only mild force was used.
SHRC judge D Jayachandran, after going through the submissions made, ruled that there was excess involved and directed the government to issue a compensation of Rs 3 lakh. The commission also recommended disciplinary action against inspector Natrajan and the sub-inspector Veeramuthu.
