BENGALURU: With 16.85 lakh trees on the felling list for 24 linear and infrastructure projects in Karnataka and many projects taking off without public consultations, activists are up in arms. Sahadeva Shivapura of Paschim Ghatta Jagruthi Vedike said, “These projects may result in felling of more than 15 lakh trees.

As majority of projects come under the Central government, the coalition government in Karnataka should seriously take up this issue with the Centre. A few hydroelectric and river diversion projects come under the state government, and it must take steps to stop these projects.”“Out of the 16.85 lakh trees on the felling list, 54,000 trees have already been cut for the power line from Mysuru to Kozhikode,” said an activist.
