CHENNAI: Three men travelling on two motorbikes were killed when their vehicles collided head-on on the Chennai-Tiruttani Road on Sunday night. The deceased were identified as Baskaran, 32, Ajith Kumar, 19, and Kathirvelan, 23.
Police said Baskaran and Hari Krishnan, 30, from Pothatturpettai at Tiruvallur were returning home after attending a wedding reception. The others bikers - Ajith and Kathirvelan from Murugampattu village - were riding towards Tiruttani.
Police said around 10.30pm, Hari Krishnan tried to overtake a truck but did not notice the other motorbike coming from the opposite direction and the two bikes collided. "Before the bikers could apply brakes the two vehicles hit each other and the four men were thrown off the motorcycles," said a police officer investigating the case. "It seems the riders were speeding and couldn't bring their vehicles under control," he said.
Hari Krishnan, who was wearing a helmet, sustained injuries and his helmet broke into pieces, said police. Passersby took him to the Tiruvallur government hospital.
Baskaran, Ajith and Kathirvelan were also wearing helmets but died on the spot due to head injuries. The Tiruttani police registered a case of causing death due to negligence. Police said Ajith was a second year student at a private college, while Baskaran and Kathirvelan worked for private firms.
