PUNE: The Vishrantwadi police on Sunday booked the Pune head of the transport wing of Republic Party of India (A) for allegedly extorting Rs10,000 from a truck driver for illegally transporting sand on Saturday.
Acting on a complaint by the truck driver, the police have registered a case under IPC sections 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) and 342 (wrongful confinement).
The man, the party’s transport wing president Mukesh Shahare, denied the charges. “I noticed the truck overloaded with the sand and alerted the police control room. If I wanted to extort the truck driver, I would not have alerted the police,” Shahare told TOI.
The police have registered a separate case against the truck driver for illegally transporting sand.
In his complaint, the driver alleged that Shahare stopped his truck and demanded Rs50,000 to let him go. The driver also alleged that Shahare took Rs10,000 from him and allowed him to go, a police officer said. Shahare said the truck driver did not have any documents or permission to transport sand, which the police confirmed. “Our probe is on,” an officer said.
