The Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) sector should be encouraged to play a greater role if the target of the National Manufacturing Policy to raise the contribution of manufacturing sector to GDP from the present 16% to 25% by the end of 2022 is to be realised, said Governor Banwarilal Purohit here on Monday.
Mr. Purohit said that the MSME sector has shown admirable adaptability to survive several economic crises.
Employment generators
“The MSMEs have been accepted as the prime drivers for employment generation and growth of GDP, besides contributing to balanced regional development. These enterprises impart resilience to withstand economic upheavals and maintain a reasonable growth rate since being indigenous is the key to sustainability and self-sufficiency,” said Mr. Purohit, while launching the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Coimbatore District Small Industries Association (Codissia).
Hailing Tamil Nadu’s contribution to the sector, the Governor said the MSMEs were the largest employment generators after agriculture in the State, providing employment to about 2 crore people.
Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum
“Consequent to the introduction of the Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) by the Ministry of MSME, Tamil Nadu started implementation of UAM from January 21, 2016. As on March 31, 2018, a total of 5,26,947 UAMs have been filed in Tamil Nadu, comprising 4,63,836 micro enterprises, 61,613 small enterprises and 1,498 medium enterprises”, he said. The Governor pointed out that the MSMEs in Coimbatore have contributed tremendously to the growth of the city, the region and the State.
