Bhubaneswar: The state Crime Branch on Sunday asked the police commissionerate and superintendents of police (SPs) in districts to take steps to prevent trafficking of girls and create a database of traffickers who take girls to other states and abroad, either on the pretext of providing them employment or marriage to well-off people.

The Crime Branch said the ministry of home affairs (MHA) has recently issued guidelines to all states on the procedures of combating and investigating girl trafficking cases.

The circular to SPs has come in the backdrop of recent reports of the gang-rape of a girl from Bengal, at Konark. The 20-year-old has alleged that she was brought to Odisha by an acquaintance who had promised her a job.

"We have asked field personnel to identify vulnerable areas where trafficking occurs rampantly. Coordination is required among departments, NGOs and Railways to curb this," additional director general of police (Crime Branch) Santosh Upadhyay said. Upadhyay said police stations should keep close watch on placement agencies in their areas.
