City gas distribution (CGD) networks started in a small way in the northeast region in the 1960s and in Gujarat in the 1980s. GAIL established CGD entities in Mumbai in 1994 and Delhi in 1997. The Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) was established in 2007.
Thirty-five CGD networks were in place prior to the establishment of the PNGRB and 145 networks have been authorised by the board since then.
