The National Investigation Agency court (NIA) has sentenced one Aabid Hassan to 10 years' imprisonment in connection with the Nedumbassery Fake Indian Currency Note (FICN) case.
Along with imprisonment, Hassan has been directed to pay Rs 75, 000 as a penalty.
Three accused in the case- Mohammad Haneefa, Abdul Salam and Antony Das- have been set free, while Kunjumohammadhad turned approver.
NIA public prosecutor Arjun said, "We are satisfied in ensuring the punishment to the accused. We see this as an ideal punishment and helpful to impart a strong message to society. We will go for appeal against those three exonerated. We hope that Kerala High Court will consider our arguments their involvement in the case. So, we will go for an appeal at Kerala High Court."
Customs officials had intercepted Hassan at the Cochin International Airport on January 26, 2013, with 1950 fake Indian currency notes of Rs 500 denomination. The notes, said to have been printed in Pakistan, had been arranged by Aftab Bhatki, believed to be a member of Dawood Ibrahim's gang. Bhatki is still absconding.
