New 'Airbnb for pools' website hits Australia despite safety concerns - as locals say making people pay is 'not the Aussie way'
- A 'pool-sharing' service, likened to Airbnb, has announced an Australian launch
- Swimply will trial a website where Sydney pool owners can rent out their pools
- Some residents have dismissed the service, saying it's 'not the Aussie way'
- Critics say they would prefer to just let their neighbours use their pool for free
A website described as 'Airbnb for pools' is launching in Australia, but not everyone is a fan.
Swimply, an American online marketplace which allows users to rent out their swimming pools at an hourly rate, will launch in Sydney trial in November.
The online app has been a raging success in the United States, with the service's founders hoping Australians take to it in the same way ahead of summer.
But some are already dismissing the concept, saying it's 'un-Australian' to ask others to pay for a swim.

Living in Sydney's north-west, Kellyville resident Kate told Nine News she and her children spend the majority of summer lazy by their pool.
But she couldn't fathom the idea of charging people to share it with them, saying that's just 'not the Aussie way'.
'We'd just invite our neighbours over, we wouldn't charge them.'
The mother is also concerned about safety and privacy, asking how liable she would be if someone drowned in her pool.

But Swimply says they have a stringent review system in place to assess safety.
They also say they have plans to introduce a pool-sharing insurance policy.
But the Royal Life Saving Australia (RLSA) doesn't share the same confidence in the company's review system.
'It's about making sure children are supervised, the highest rates of drowning for under fives are in backyard pools,' Royal Life Saving Australia National Manager for Research and Policy Amy Peden said.
They're also concerned the service will be used to rent pools for parties and functions, both events where alcohol could be consumed.
Ms Peden says alcohol consumption greatly increases the risk of drowning.
The 21-year-old CEO of Swimply, Bunim Laskin, says the company operates as a sharing service like Uber and Airbnb and does not accept any liability.
