NEW DELHI: He may no longer remain in the scheme of things for the national selectors after being dropped for the upcoming T20I series against West Indies and Australia, but India wicketkeeper Mahendra Singh Dhoni displayed his fitness prowess by pouching a stunning catch during the third ODI against Windies in Pune on Saturday.
Jasprit Bumrah, playing his first match of the series, struck to dismiss Chandrapaul Hemraj and give India first breakthrough in the sixth over. But what made the talking point of the dismissal is Dhoni's sensational piece of work at the MCA Stadium that also garnered the huge cheer from the crowds.
Hemraj failed to connect Bumrah's short delivery as the ball induced the top edge that went up high in the air. The 37-year-old Dhoni ran about 20 yards and made a full stretch dive to complete the catch.
The national selectors pulled off a major surprise late on Friday night, dropping Dhoni from India's 16-member squad for the T20 International series against both the West Indies and Australia later this year. This is the first time Dhoni has been dropped since establishing himself in Indian cricket.
Despite being a sharp planner and a safe and agile hand behind the stumps, Dhoni has been struggling to finish matches with the bat, something that came naturally to him at his peak and made him a modern legend.
