Police officers in India tend to have a very stereotypical image. Even though police handles on Twitter try to project a cool image, very rarely cops are deemed as friends by commoners. But there are good samaritan cops, who understand the spirit of the law and work accordingly to help citizens.
A Facebook user from Dakhineshwar, situated in northern fringes of Kolkata recently shared an encounter with a police officer which has gone viral. It has been shared over 30,000 times with 25,000 people commenting and applauding the police officer. Here' what Kamanashis Samaddar wrote on Facebook: " I was going to Bandal for some office work. I was intercepted by police officer Amol Karmakar at Dakhineshwar bridge. Karmakar is around 50 years old. He wanted to see my papers. Then I realised that I have forgotten to bring my money bag which has license, blue book, and other relevant details. I didn't have any cash at that time. I explained the situation to the officer and asked my family members to send the soft copy of the documents on WhatsApp. After understanding my situation, the officer offered to give me money. He gave me one Rs 100 note and two Rs 10 notes. "
Samaddar further wrote that he was stunned and also taken aback by the police officer's gesture. He was also a bit suspicious. Hence he said to the cop that he doesn't need the money and will go back to his house to collect the documents. However, the officer was unrelenting and gave Samaddar the money. Samaddar thought for a while that maybe these are fake currencies. Hence, just to be sure, he used the Rs 10 notes to buy a cold drink. However, the notes turned out to be genuine. Then a sense of guilt engulfed him for disbelieving the helpful traffic cop.
In the emotional Facebook post, he even apologised to Amol Karmakar. He finished his post by saying. " ASI Amal Karmakar, I think you are the great police officer. Salute you more & more. May God bless". This incident again shows good people are still there. It is upto us to find them and give them their due recognition.
