SOUNDBITE (english) FBI SPECIAL AGENT BOB JONES "This is the most horrific crime scene I've seen in 22 years in the FBI.

Members of the Tree of Life synagogue, conducting a peaceful service in their place of worship, were brutally murdered by a gunman targeting them simply because of their faith.

The suspect's full motive is unknown, but we believe he was acting alone…and over the next several days and weeks we will look at everything in the suspect's life: his home, his vehicle, his social media, and his movements over the last several days." Police say the gunman used an Ar15 assault rifle and three handguns.

Right before the attack the suspect said in an online post that a Jewish refugee organization, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, "likes to bring invaders in that kill our people.

I can't sit by and watch my people get slaughtered.

Screw your optics, I'm going in." Police surrounded the the Tree of Life synagogue after reports of an active shooter in the city's eastern Squirrel Hill neighborhood.

At the time, the synagogue was holding a shabbat religious service.

SOUNDBITE (english) US PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP: "This wicked act of mass murder is pure evil....This was an anti-Semitic act." The FBI is investigating the shooting as a hate crime.
