Political developments in Lanka create panic among Tamils : Stalin

Chennai, DMK President and Opposition Leader M K Stalin on Saturday said the overnight political developments in Sri Lanka that saw former President Mahinda Rajapakse becoming the new Prime Minister, has created a sense of fear and panic not only among the Eelam Tamils, but also among the people of Tamil Nadu.

In a statement here, Mr Stalin said the ‘illegal’ assumption of office as Prime Minister by Rajapakse, who has been accused of committing genocide during the final phase of the ethnic war and the DMK submitting a petition to the UN Security Council demanding an independent probe into the human rights violations and to bring the culprits to book, has caused a major fear among the Eelam tamils who were expecting justice for their sufferings.

Referring to the recent visits of Mr Rajapakse and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe and their meeting with Indian PM Narendra Modi and the more shocking allegation of RAW plotting to kill Sri Lankan President Maithiripala Sirisena and the subsequent denial, he said in these backdrop Mr Rajapakse becoming Prime Minister without having a majority was shocking.

Quoting media reports, Mr Stalin said the present developments in Sri Lanka has taken place at a time a cold war was prevailing between India and China.

‘If such developments continued, it will pose a great danger to India in the future’, he said and urged the Indian Government and the External affairs Ministry to clarify on the security of the Tamil fishermen, the visit of Lankan leaders and the charges levelled against the RAW.

Accusing the Centre of ignoring the rights of Tamils, Mr Stalin said the Governor maintaining silence on the State Cabinet resolution recommending release of seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, was an affront on Tamils.

Mr Stalin also cautioned the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre not to indulge in any acts within the country or abroad, that went against the welfare of the Tamils.
