CHENNAI: A man facing criminal cases stabbed his wife with the help of his friends on Thursday night saying she had failed to take him out on bail. She is battling for her life, police said.

According to Thiruvanmiyur police, Rajesh, 28, of Kannagi Nagar is a history-sheeter. He was arrested on July 23 and lodged at the Central prison in Puzhal.

Rajesh’s wife Saranya, 26, neither visited him in jail nor made any effort to get him out on bail.

With the help of his friends, Rajesh came out on bail on Wednesday. After getting drunk, he came home and picked up a fight with his wife. However, she ignored him and went to a friend’s house.

He later accused her of having a relationship outside wedlock, and when she did not react, Rajesh got angry and decided to murder Saranya with the help of his friends, police said.

On Thursday, around 5.30pm, Rajesh picked up Saranya in an autorickshaw from Kannagi Nagar on the pretext of taking her to a temple in Thiruvanmiyur. He engaged her in a conversation till they reached Sivasundar Avenue where four men intercepted the vehicle and stabbed her on the chest, hands and head.

After they threw her in a park, a few passersby came to her rescue and took her to a nearby private hospital where she was given first-aid before being shifted to Government Royapettah Hospital. Her condition is said to be critical.

On Friday she gave a statement before a magistrate. Shortly thereafter, a police team nabbed Parthasarathy, 23, a friend of Rajesh, in connection with the murder attempt. Police have launched a search for Rajesh and three others in connection with the case. They are also scanning CCTV footage to establish the identity of others.
