THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Salagramam ashram at Kundamankadavu, founded by controversial spiritual leader Swami Sandeepananda Giri, was attacked by unidentified assailants in the wee hours of Saturday.


Two cars and a Honda Activa scooter, parked outside the ashram, were completely gutted after the assailants set them on fire.

Sandeepananda Giri recently faced ire from Ayyappa devotees and Hindu organisations for taking a liberal stance on the issue of entry of women into Sabarimala temple. He had also been vocal about his view and expressed them through social media and in TV news channel discussions.


Fire and rescue services personnel said that they received the call at around 2.50am. A unit from Thiruvananthapuram Fire Station was dispatched to the spot. By the time they reached the spot, the vehicles were completely gutted.


The police also reached the spot and conducted a probe.


Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan visited the ashram and condemned the attack.


Swami Sandeepananda Giri, a popular spiritual leader and founder and director of School of Bhagavad Gita and Salagramam Public Charitable Trust, has been in controversy over his liberal views.
