BMW Confirms 8-Series Convertible Debut For L.A. Auto Show

The BMW 8-Series Convertible will be officially unveiled next month at the 2018 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Joining the Coupe as the second member of the new 8-Series range, the open-top model is powered by the same twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 as the Coupe that’s making 523 hp (530 PS / 390 kW) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque.

BMW says the M850i xDrive Coupe does 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 3.7 seconds, but due to the added weight penalty, the Convertible will be a bit slower, probably needing 3.8-3.9 seconds for the same sprint. Europeans will likely get the 840d version of the car, too, with the 315 hp (320 PS / 235 kW) and 580 lb-ft (680 Nm) 3.0-liter diesel.

Presented alongside the brand’s big premiere at the auto show that starts on November 28 for the press will be other new BMW cars, including the 3-Series 340i Sedan. With 382 hp (387 PS / 285 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) lb-ft of torque produced by the 3.0-liter six-banger, M Performance chassis tuning, xDrive AWD and other work, it’s the most potent version of the car, and will be topped only by the M3 when the latter breaks cover.

The BMW X7 will make its local premiere as well. The flagship SUV will launch in the United States next March, with production to take place at the Spartanburg plant, and is aimed to those who want something bigger and more lavish than the new X5.

The third-gen Z4 will sit under the spotlight at the automotive event, too. It is powered by a 3.0-liter inline-six with 382 hp (397 PS / 285 kW) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque, which helps it sprint to 60 mph (96 km/h) in 4.4 seconds. Moreover, BMW promises sublime handling thanks to its perfect 50:50 weight distribution.

Offering a glimpse into BMW’s future is the Vision iNEXT, an autonomous electric crossover concept unveiled last month. It, too, will be on display in Los Angeles, alongside the new X5.
