Market volatility

With reference to Editorial ‘Slippery slope’ (October 26) reiterates inculcating decision making in retail investors based on access to sound fundamentals of stock markets. That will ensure that panic triggers can be neutralised and prevent sentiments from ruling the roost and ensure rational decision making based on the potential of the stock.

Relief for TN govt

The disqualification of TN MLAs is interesting in many ways. If by-elections are held, it would be both a delight and a nightmare for psephologists and pundits. While EPS may scrape through on standard probability, it is the DMK that would be the unwilling contestant. On one hand, given the faction ridden AIADMK, DMK has an edge on vote split. But on the other, the anti-incumbency factor will also play a part. But the AIADMK must go all out to win all the 20 seats to consolidate its power for the remaining part of its term. For now, the DMK will treat this as a dry run and assess its own internal fissures for repairs. The outcome — EPS may serve out his balance term and DMK better placed for 2021.

Chinese ‘threat’

With reference to ‘Chinese imports are undermining Make in India’ (October 26), random check on imports and getting to the roots of under invoicing will only help to an extent. To take Chinese imports head on we will have to develop and strengthen our manufacturing MSMEs by providing them access to latest technology to help them produce quality goods. And it is precisely here Make in India needs to be nurtured. The government needs to come out with clearly defined ways and mechanism to make Make in India a real success.

Time to ditch the car

With reference to ‘Time to ditch the car’ (October 26), the issue of pollution and reduction of vehicle use control has been debated for long without any meaningful solution in sight. More than strict rules, educating people on hazards of pollution, and traffic jams are the right move to reduce air pollution. Without people’s co-operation and awareness, problems relating to traffic and air pollution cannot be solved. With a good public transport system people will not use private vehicles/cars which will not only ease road congestion but will also reduce pollution levels and save fuel. Point to point services should be encouraged for commuters who have fixed hours of work like government servants, bankers, teachers etc. Secondly in big cities, government servants, who are official vehicles, should be allowed to use their vehicles only for emergencies and urged to use public transport. The odd-even number scheme of the Delhi government should be introduced on an experimental basis. Finally no government scheme will be successful without the whole hearted participation of the people and hence NGOs, teachers, students and artistes should be roped in to sensitise people and explain the benefits of using public transport system and reduce air pollution.

CBI ‘politics’

It is painful to see the politicisation of the CBI. The sordid events are not about BJP vs Congress but about the subversion of rule of law. If we want the rule of law to prevail, we must end the influence of politics over bureaucracy and agencies like CBI.
