Will Pucovski out of cricket with mental health issue

Brilliant young Victorian batsman Will Pucovski is standing out of cricket for an indefinite period because of a mental health issue.

The 20-year-old batsman made 243 in his most recent first class match, a Sheffield Shield encounter with Western Australia in Perth, putting his name on the radar for Test selection.

But he stepped aside from Victoria's Shield match against New South Wales at the MCG this week and the reason is clear now.

A Cricket Victoria spokesman said Pucovski would have "an indefinite break" for treatment on "a mental health-related illness" but gave no further detail.

Cricket Victoria’s Doctor Trefor James said: “Will’s health remains our highest priority and Cricket Victoria’s medical staff will continue to provide support to Will during this time.”

Cricket Victoria General Manager – Cricket Shaun Graf said: “Will is a terrific young player and we need to do what’s best for him at this time. We’ll continue to work with our medical staff to determine the best training and preparation plan to support Will at this time.”

Pucovski has had a history of concussion, seven in all and three last season while playing for Victoria.
