The prices of teas at the various auction centres across the globe have posted an increase so far this calendar compared to the same period of 2017, barring in Africa.
In some auction centres, the increase was only marginal, reveals an analysis of the latest data available with the Tea Boards of various countries.
Sri Lankan teas fetched the world’s highest price of $4 a kg against $3.99 in 2017.
Rwanda teas got the second highest price of $2.92 which was lower than last year’s average of $3.15.
Kenyan teas followed at $2.69 a kg which was significantly lower than $2.98 last year.
Bangladesh teas got $2.4, up from last year’s $2.20
Indian teas followed at $2.02, up from $1.99. Here, North Indian teas sold at Kolkata, Guwahati and Siliguri fetched an average of $2.22 against $2.15 last year.
South Indian teas sold through Kochi, Coimbatore, Coonoor and Teaserve received an average price of $1.48 against $1.53 last year. Of them, Teaserve’s $1.04 (last year: $1.27) was the world’s lowest average price.
Teas of other nations fetched less than $2 a kg.
