THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: In freakish incident, a tipper lorry carrying heavy load got trapped on tarred road after the road caved in.
The incident occurred on Sreekanteswaram-Kaithamukku road around 8am. The truck was coming from Sreekanth swaram and got trapped just before it entered the Uppidamoodu rail overbridge.
The incident occurred under Vanchi good police station limits. Vanchiyoor Police Inspector Suresh V Nair said that the truck was carrying 10 tonnes of crushed rock. It was proceeding towards National Highway 66 via Vanchiyoor and Chackai when the mishap occurred.
''Vehicular traffic was affected for nearly two hours. We deployed additional men and diverted the traffic'', the inspector said. The road was cleared after police brought a crane and lifted the truck. The crushed rocks spilt on the road was also cleared.
Kerala Road Fund Board (KRFB) is the concessionaire of the road. KRFB officials have reached the spot after being alerted by the cops and are inspecting the road.
A day ago, on Thursday morning, a school van carrying 13 students had fallen into a canal after a portion of the road caved in similarly at Chovvara in the outskirts of the city. The students survived with minor injuries. However, in that case, the road wasn't tarred as the one at Uppidammoodu, where the truck got trapped.
