HYDERABAD: Women in the city are determined to take back their space in the ‘ladies-only’ coaches in the Hyderabad Metro Rail.
Several women have voiced their ire on social media against men occupying the coaches set aside for them.
HMRL officials said a certain leeway was given for male commuters to follow the rules but promised that action would be taken against men entering ladies’ coaches.
Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) managing director N V S Reddy while responding to a comment on Twitter wrote that the agency would act against men who occupy ladies’-only coaches.
“Often women glance at each other, hoping that someone will speak up,” a commuter Naveena Ghanate tweeted recently.
Reddy said that the HMRL has put up boards alerting male commuters not to travel in ‘ladies-only’ coaches at Metro stations.
L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited (LTMRHL) officials said on social media that announcements were being made and staff members are sent to educate the public on the need to follow the rules. According to the LTMRHL authorities, surprise checks are often conducted to curb this menace.
The ‘ladies-only’ coaches were inaugurated on May 7.
