Ryanair was under tremendous pressure to apologise after one of its passenger David Mesher had racially abused an elderly lady Delsie Gayle on a flight from Barcelona to Stansted last Friday.
In a letter to Mrs. Gayle, the airline has tendered an apology for what happened on board. The matter is under police investigation and the airline will cooperate fully with them.
According to the airline, the Spanish cabin crew were aware of the argument between the two passengers but did not know about the racial comment. The cabin crew followed the company procedure for dealing with arguments. They offered them to move the passengers to alternate seats. In this case the female passenger chose to sit beside her daughter who was travelling on the same flight.
After the seat change, both passengers were asked if they were ‘okay’, and they confirmed in the positive.
David Lawrence had filmed the incident, and his video went viral on Facebook. The airline claims that they became aware of the video content through social media. The airline said that they wrote to the elderly lady as soon as they saw the video.
Ryanair said they have a long record of not tolerating disruptive or abusive passenger behaviour. They have been on the forefront of calling for greater powers and more effective Government follow-up in cases of passenger disruption onboard flights.
David Mesher has made a public apology saying that he is not a racist. It was a fit of temper at that time.
