Three years ago, it would’ve been impossible to get a smartphone with a dual camera, a blazingly fast processor and all the basic sensors for less than 40-50K. But because of players like Honor, such amazing phones are well within the reach of the common man. The recently launched Honor 8X is a testament to Honor’s innovative design and masterful technology. Its main competitor, the Redmi Note 5 Pro, has also been popular with the public. Design and display
Honor has completely crushed Xiaomi in terms of design language. There is an obvious difference in the design as well as the build quality of the two phones. While the Honor 8X focuses on aesthetics and details, the Redmi Note 5 Pro adapts the tried and tested design. Honor’s 16.51cm FullView Notch Display 2.0 enhances the user’s overall viewing experience. It has minimal bezels and offers a glass body with a thin bottom border using the innovative ‘chip- on-film’ technology. The smartphone uses a metal middle frame and adopts a 2.5D double textured aurora glass body with a grating effect, providing an elegant and smooth look and feel.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, has thick bezels, monotonous colours, and a dated design. It feels bulkier, despite having a smaller display. Unlike the 8X, the Note 5 Pro has no ‘wow’ factor. Both phones feature a 3.5mm headphone jack, a single speaker grill at the bottom, and a fingerprint scanner on the back.
Performance and battery
Honor’s newest family member comes equipped with the latest Octa-core Kirin 710 chipset with a 12nm Cortex-A73 generation-based SoC which supports the AI functionality with up to 6 gigs of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The Redmi Note 5 Pro, on the other hand, comes with a Snapdragon 636 processor coupled with either 4GB or 6GB RAM, although the storage is the same at 64GB in both models. The absence of AI functionality in the Note 5 Pro is a bummer.
Moreover, the chipsets of the 8X are enhanced by the revolutionary GPU turbo: a ground- breaking hardware software integration and graphics processing acceleration technology that optimizes mobile gaming like never before. Because there is no special feature to enhance the GPU, a Note 5 Pro user can experience lags and frame drops while gaming.
Storage is another area where the 8X earns brownie points. The dual sim handset comes with an option of expanding the internal storage up to 400GB using a dedicated MicroSD card slot. It is equipped with Dual VoLTE and packs a high capacity 3750mAh large battery.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro has a hybrid sim-slot and a 4000mAh battery. Both devices have the facial unlock feature, but Honor’s AI-enabled Face Unlock function can adapt to difficult light conditions and small facial changes and makes unlocking easier and more secure.
Camera
The dual AI 20MP + 2MP rear camera of the Honor 8X can click some seriously amazing pictures. The camera has a F/1.8 aperture that supports phase detection autofocus (PDAF) and utilizes AI to intelligently recognize over 500 scenarios in 22 categories. For low-light/night shots, it uses a multi-frame stabilization technology that results in clear pictures with excellent detail and natural colour reproduction.
Its 16MP front camera has an enhanced portrait mode that provides natural bokeh effect and true skin tone. Honor 8X’s super-slow-motion feature can record videos at 16x slow motion (480fps) and with augmented reality (AR) effect, the camera can produce interesting group photos, by changing the background and creating AR masks, etc.
The Redmi Note 5 Pro has a 12MP+5MP sensor on the back and a 20MP front camera. The cameras, although decent, can’t compete with the 8X. The beauty mode can make selfies seem a little artificial and overly enhanced. In low-light, the Note 5 Pro’s camera quality is simply not up to mark.

Overall, the Honor 8X is a better proposition compared to the Redmi Note 5 Pro given the kind of specifications it packs. It is an all-rounder that provides the best value for money.
