KOLKATA: A 36-year-old man was arrested by the Beliaghata police for allegedly molesting and stalking a senior research fellow of a central institute that specializes in enteric diseases. The incident took place around 10am on Wednesday on the campus.
The cops said the accused was identified as Manish Hurad, a resident of Odisha’s Keonjhar. The survivor hails from a northeastern state. The incident has been reported on Wednesday around 10 am inside the campus.
“In her written complaint to us, the woman stated that the accused had outraged her modesty by first stalking her, then pulling her hand and finally touching her inappropriately. Based on her complaint and prima facie evidence, we arrested the accused,” said an investigating officer.
Shanta Dutta, director of the institute, said the accused was an outsider. “We have found out that he knew the girl from another institute and had been stalking her for sometime. Today, on the advice of seniors, she reported the matter to the police. We will extend our full support to her,” said Dutta.
“We have a committee in place and the director herself is likely to probe in to the case on Thursday itself,” said a senior official. The cops have asked other students present on the campus at the time of the incident to join the probe.
