With the rise of Instagram trends, mothers everywhere seem to go to extreme lengths to throw their child the ultimate birthday party.

But for one Melbourne mother, she has banned her family from birthday celebrations for an entire year.

After falling into the grips of the 'kid party world', the mother said she realised how 'ridiculous' and 'over the top' parties have become.

Speaking to Mamamia, she listed the five main reasons she decided to take a 12-month break from children's birthday bashes in her household.

She explained how organising the guest list was becoming too stressful.

'Kids birthday parties have become such a complex game of social and playground politics that the thought of deciding who is invited or who isn't has literally kept me awake at night,' the mother said.

She explained how birthday parties never used to be about winning every game - but today, every child walks away with a prize.

'Now these "games" are just giveaways because no one loses, and everyone takes home a prize,' she said.

She also revealed how parties have changed significantly in recent years, with parents now setting up gift registries so their child can decide what they want.

She said another issue she noticed was how many parents are now throwing extravagant parties with epic themes.

Despite admitting she has organised big parties for her children in the past, the mother said she noticed party themes are getting bigger more than ever.

And she said it's no longer a birthday without the party entertainers.

'My memories of parties at McDonald's or when someone's parents turned on the sprinkler in the backyard and let us make their own fun are long gone,' she said.
