The statue of freedom fighter Muthuramalinga Thevar at his memorial in Pasumpon was adorned with a golden ‘kavasam’ (ornamental plate in gold) on Wednesday, amid tight security, ahead of the Thevar Jayanthi – 56th Guru puja (death anniversary) and 111th birth anniversary on October 30.
After taking possession of the gold armour from the safe in State Bank of India (SBI), Anna Nagar branch in Madurai, Minister for Information Technology M. Manikandan, brought the 13 kg ‘kavasam’ with armed police escort to Pasumpon and adorned the statue with it.
Superintendent of Police Omprakash Meena, heirs of the freedom fighter, Ms Gandhi Meenal Natarajan, caretaker of the memorial, were among others present. Former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had presented the gold armour on September 2, 2014.
The SP said round-the-clock armed security guards had been posted at the memorial till the armour was taken back to the safe after jayanthi.
