Parents of children heading trick-or-treating this Halloween have been warned not to let them out of their sights after creepy clowns threatened to return to the streets.

The advice comes after Facebook group 'Clown Purge Sydney' announced plans to terrorise Sydney families once again on October 31.

'Who's going trick-or-treating?' the ominous message posted on October 10 read.  

New South Wales police told Daily Mail Australia they didn't expect any serious trouble, however, parents should be aware of the threat and take steps to ensure their child's safety.

They said parents should accompany their children, or at least be aware of their whereabouts, and encourage them to stay with friends during the spooky season.

'Remain in familiar well-lit areas in your neighbourhood and don’t take short cuts,' the spokesperson suggested parents tell their children,' a police spokesperson said.

NSW police also encouraged children to stick to the planned route and always cross the road at designated lights and crossings.

'Be sure to stick to the footpaths and take extra care when crossing driveways or roads,' a spokesperson said.
