Three persons have been arrested for overlooking safety measures during the cleaning of a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) sewer in north-west Delhi’s Jahangirpuri that led the death of a 32-year-old worker, the police said on Wednesday.
The arrested persons were produced before a Magistrate and they have been sent to a 12-day judicial custody.
The police said that during investigation, it was found that the DJB had given the contract of repair and rehabilitation of the sewer in Jahangirpuri to K.K. Spun India Ltd.
“We contacted senior officials of the firm and called them for questioning. We had asked them to come along with relevant documents. After scrutinising the documents and role of the persons concerned, three persons were arrested,” a senior police officer said.
The arrested persons have been identified as project manager Ashwini Kumar Jha, site supervisor Subodh and safety officer Subham Notiyal. Subodh had ignored the safety threat to the worker, who was entering inside the sewer while Notiyal overlooked the safety measures at the site. Jha was the project manager who did not survey the site properly regarding safety precautions, the police said.
Deceased Dooman Ray (32), who hailed from Bihar’s Katihar, drowned in the sewer on Sunday morning. Ray was accompanied by two men, who were supposed to pull him out when he would open a valve of which water would come gushing out. However, they could not do so on time, leading to Ray’s death.
An FIR was registered under IPC Section 304A (causing death by negligence) and Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act at Jahangirpuri police station.
