Two elderly women were found dead at their residence in outer Delhi’s Paschim Vihar on Thursday evening, police said. According to police, the dead were identified as sisters Usha Pathak (75) and Asha Pathak (70).

“The incident came to light when their maid, Rani, came around 1.30 pm and found the door was ajar. On entering, she found the house was ransacked. She raised an alarm and informed the neighbours, who informed police about the incident,” police said.

Police called the forensic team to lift fingerprints from the spot, and their bodies were sent for post-mortem.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that a plumber came to their home Wednesday, police said, adding that the maid has also corroborated in her statement that she saw him at the women’s house.

“Prima-facie it appears like they were bludgeoned… One sister had injuries on her head while the other one was strangulated to death. There is no evidence of forcible entry and it seems like the accused knew the victim,” DCP (outer) Seju Kuruvilla said.

The post-mortem will be conducted Friday, following which the bodies will be handed over to the relatives, the DCP said. Meanwhile, police have detained around 10 persons, including the security guard from the area, and are questioning them.

While Usha worked as a librarian at Indian Council of Agricultural Research in Krishi Bhawan, Asha was a music teacher in a UP college. “The sisters were not married and used to live together in Paschim Vihar,” police said.
