CHANDIGARH: The Punjab and Haryana high court on Thursday granted bail to self-proclaimed godman Asaram’s son Narain Sai in relation to an attempt to murder case. Sai is facing the charges to attack on a Panipat resident who is one of the witnesses against him in a sexual assault case.
Justice Daya Chaudhary of the HC passed the orders while allowing the petition filed by Narain Sai. While the Haryana police had strongly objected to the bail plea, the Sai had argued that he was falsely implicated in the case.
On May 13, 2015, Mahender Chawla, the main eyewitness in the case involving Narayan Sai, survived an attack as two unidentified men opened fire on him at his residence in Sanauli village, the last village of Panipat on Haryana-UP Border.
With two bullets shot in his shoulder, Mahender Chawla was rushed to the hospital, where he survived.
In his statement given to the police, Chawla had accused Narain Sai for attacking him because he is one of the key witnesses against him in relation to a sexual assault case.
Thereafter, a case under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 342 (wrongful confinement), 195-A (threatening any person to give false evidence) 120-B (criminal conspiracy) under IPC and other sections of the Arms Act was registered against Sai.
Narain Sai is accused of committing repeated sexual assaults between 2002 and 2005 on a woman who was living at his Surat ashram, following which he was booked under various sections of the IPC, including rape, unnatural sex, molestation, wrongful confinement etc.
