In a major security lapse, YSR Congress leader YS Jagan Mohan Reddy was on Thursday injured when he was attacked by a man with a sharp-edged object at the Vizag airport.
Reddy, the leader of the opposition in the Andhra Pradesh assembly, received a minor injury on his shoulder and is doing fine, officials said.
The initial report said the assailant was employed at the airport canteen. He has been taken into police custody.
"Opposition leader Jaganmohan Reddy was attacked at Visakhapatnam airport today. The attacker has been identified as a worker at the airport. He approached Reddy asking him for a selfie and attacked him. He has been taken into custody and inquiry is underway," Andhra Pradesh Home Minister NC Rajappa said.
The attacker, identified as one Srinivas, is a native of Amalapuram town in East Godavari district. He approached Reddy for a selfie and attacked him after the selfie. Mr Redd was struck on his shoulders with a sharp knife used in cockfights.
Reports said that the airport canteen where Srinivas is employed is run by TDP leader Harsha Vardhan.
The attack is a major lapse in the airport security as since the attack took place post the security check.
Commenting on the matter, Civil Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu said he has asked all agencies to investigate the matter thoroughly.
"Shocked by attack on Mr Jagan Reddy, asked all agencies to investigate matter thoroughly, including @CISFHQrs. Asked secretary civil aviation to fix responsibility. I strongly condemn this cowardly attack, we will punish the guilty. Investigations are underway, started immediately," he said.
