KOCHI: If things go as planned, Ernakulam will become the first district in the state to provide construction materials online for Life Mission beneficiaries.

“To help Life Mission beneficiaries build houses within their budget, the mission is taking steps to provide construction materials at a cheap rate. An online platform will be set up for this and various companies will be roped in to make the project a success,” said Life Mission district coordinator Ernest C Thomas said.

In the 2017-18 fiscal, the district became the first district in the state to complete the construction of 98 percent houses under the Mission.

In the second phase, around 2,984 families were given the first instalment of the money sanctioned for constructing a house. A contract was signed with landed beneficiaries for around 4,831 houses. A sum of approximately `32.29 crore has been handed over to beneficiaries under the mission. Construction of 132 houses have been completed while only the roof remains to be built for 483 houses.

Of the 69 houses planned to be built under Life Mission for this fiscal, 30 have been completed. The Life Mission initiative of the state government aims at providing homeless people in the state a roof over their heads.

Keys of houses to be handed over today

Keys of the houses constructed under Life Mission will be handed over to beneficiaries by Minister for Local Self-Government A C Moideen on Thursday. The houses have been constructed at Kunnukara.

Kunnukara has become the only panchayat in the state to hand over the money sourced from the government and the three-tier body, to all the beneficiaries. Panchayat president Tharayyil said the construction of the remaining 39 houses will be completed by November 30.
