A man who downloaded thousands of child porn images and videos on his mum's account claimed he did it to make money from selling the vile material.

George Milonas, of Kings Park in Melbourne's northwest, was caught by police red-handed as he downloaded some of the sickest child porn in existence.

The car parts salesman told police 'someone at work told me you could make money selling child pornography' and claimed he never got off on the depraved material.

Milonas had downloaded 9354 images and 900 videos using his mum's internet account. 

Hundreds of videos were of children being raped, with at least 24 videos containing content so depraved it cannot be reported. 

The County Court of Victoria heard infants and toddlers were among the children being violated and tortured. 

Milonas had repeatedly searched for 'pre-teen hardcore' material and was downloading filth sometimes daily between 2013 and January 5 last year when police pounced. 

The former Essendon Grammar boy told psychologist Dr Brett Bedson that he only downloaded the porn to 'punish himself'. 

Milonas told the doctor he found the material 'sickening' and that he knew what he was doing was wrong.

Dr Bedson backed Milonas's outrageous claims in court, declaring he did not seek sexual gratification and believed it 'was a form of punishment' brought on by the post traumatic stress of losing his father when he was a kid. 

The doctor had not been told about Milonas's plans to sell the porn for profit because he was 'in need of serious money'.

He also failed to ask Milonas how often he viewed the porn, or test him for a paraphilic disorder. 

Prosecutors described the doctor's opinion as 'questionable' and condemned Milonas for a porn downloading spree that lasted three years and eight months. 

Judge Michael O'Çonnell said there was no evidence during that period to suggest Milonas had actually tried to sell any of the porn he had collected. 

And he did not accept Milonas' explanation that he didn't download the material for sexual gratification.

'I must therefore in sentencing you emphasise the need to protect children and the need to deter others,' Judge OÇonnell said. 

He sentenced Milonas to 15 months in jail after which he will be released back into the community on the condition he behaves himself for three years.

If he plays up, Milonas will be forced to serve an additional 15 months. 

He will also go on the sex register for the next 15 years.
