Amphitheatre, sound and light show to liven up waterfront

Nagpur: The city may have lost a hang out spot with the demolition of Futala waterfront shops but Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) and MahaMetro plan a far grander replacement.
NIT is planning a musical fountain-cum-sound and light show on the lake while MahaMetro will build an amphitheatre for people to enjoy it. A road tunnel will be constructed below the amphitheatre so that it does not become an obstruction for traffic. Also, spectators will not be disturbed by the sound of traffic passing by.
PP Dhankar, NIT’s executive engineer (west), said the cost of the sound and light show project was Rs 50 crore. “The work order has been issued to a French company and negotiations are going on over price. All equipment will be imported from France,” he added.
“Indian Air Force (IAF), whose headquarters Maintenance Command is near the lake, had raised objections and hence laser will not be used. There will also be a cap on sound limit,” said Dhankar.
The amphitheatre and road tunnel are NIT projects but they will executed by MahaMetro on directives of Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari. The project also includes construction of a cement road from Futala to Bharat Nagar through land belonging to Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krushi Vidyapeeth (PDKV). The total cost is Rs 114 crore. NIT is all set to get Rs 40 crore for the project from Central Road Fund, sanctioned by Gadkari.
The viewing gallery will be an open structure and will have seating arrangement similar to Yeshwant Stadium. It will run along the length of the lake so that maximum people can view the musical fountain. The gallery will, however, have tensile roofing so that it can be covered during rainy season.
The tunnel and the gallery will be 12-metre wide. The 600-metre long tunnel will begin some distance after the road turns towards Futala lake from Amravati Road. It will continue till the T-point on the other end of the lake. Its floor will be one metre above the lake surface as per environmental norms. The viewing gallery will be constructed atop this tunnel
MahaMetro proposes to build shops between the tunnel and the amphitheatre but NIT is in no mood to accommodate owners of the razed waterfront shops as it considers them encroachers.
