Ex-DM favours kin in Agra expressway land deals, booked

AGRA: Former district magistrate of Agra Zuhair Bin Sagheer has been booked by Agra police for allegedly providing undue favour to his cousin in acquisition of land for the Agra-Lucknow Expressway. Sagheer is currently special secretary in the minor irrigation department.


The FIR was lodged in Fatehabad police station on Tuesday based on the written complaint of the state vigilance department. Sagheer was booked under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act.


The FIR read, "During his tenure as district magistrate of Agra in 2013-14, Sagheer misused his power to provide undue favour to his maternal cousin, Khalida Rehman, to buy 0.34 hectares of land in Swara and 0.69 hectares in Tibaha villages of Fatehabad tehsil at Rs 8.20 lakh before releasing (October 13, 2013) the notification in public domain of land acquisition for Agra-Lucknow Expressway. In July 2014, UPEIDA bought the same plots from Sagheer's cousin at Rs 28.65 lakh, which profited Rehman Rs 20.45 lakh."


On Tuesday, two FIRs were lodged against eight people, including Sagheer. One case was of the alleged misuse of power by transferring waqf land without permission from the authorities and releasing government-acquired land in Moradabad. Former ADM of Moradabad Arun Kumar Srivastava, tehsildar Sanjay Kumar, revenue inspector Parvez Khan, revenue clerk Subhash Chandra and three others have been booked.
