GURUGRAM: Harnek Singh Dhillon (77), who was found unconscious with his wrist slit in his J-block house in DLF 2 last Saturday, was arrested on Wednesday for murdering his 74-year-old wife Gurmel Kaur.
Kaur was found dead on a blood-soaked bed with her throat slit and an autopsy conducted on Monday confirmed she was murdered. Dhillon, booked under sections 302 (murder) and 309 (attempting suicide) of the IPC, will be produced in court on Thursday.
In his statement recorded on Wednesday after doctors declared him fit to talk, Dhillon claimed that he and his wife had made a suicide pact. But, she failed to commit suicide, so he cut her throat and then slashed his own wrist to end life but survived, he claimed. Dhillon further said that they were under stress for about a week, since Jaskaran Singh (51) went missing after visiting their house on October 14.
Family members of Jaskaran, who was known to Dhillon, had filed a missing person’s complaint at Sector 29 police station on October 16, alleging involvement of Dhillon in Jaskaran’s disappearance.
Jaskaran’s wife Manjeet Kaur, resident of Saraswati Vihar, had claimed when Jaskaran did not return home on October 14, she had gone to Dhillon’s place, looking for her husband. According to Manjeet, Dhillon had admitted that her husband had visited them around 2.15pm.
Later, a police team, along with Manjeet, had also visited Dhillon’s house on October 16 but didn’t find anything suspicious. Dhillon told police that Jaskaran’s family members had visited DLF 2 and created a ruckus outside their house, causing them a lot of embarrassment.
“Dhillon claimed they were under stress as Jaskaran’s family was holding them responsible for his (Jaskaran) disappearance,” said Vishnu Prasad, SHO, DLF 2. Police said they would request court to allow them to take Dhillon on four-day remand for further investigation and find out Dhillon’s role, if any, in the missing person’s case.
The police are yet to identify the man who was caught on CCTV camera installed at the J block. The man was seen coming to the house on a scooter on Saturday morning. In the footage, the person could be seen departing after a few minutes, leaving his scooter parked outside the house. The cops are now trying to identify this person and find out if he had any connection with the case.
