New Hyundai Veloster N Celebrates U.S. Launch At Thunderhill Raceway

Hyundai is introducing the all-new Veloster N to the press at the Thunderhill Raceway track in Northern California, before its official market launch later this year.

The performance version of the Veloster is Hyundai’s first model to wear the N moniker on this side of the Atlantic. Just like the i30 N, the Hyundai Veloster N was developed in the company’s test center at the Nurburgring, claiming to offer true driving thrills in a daily-friendly package.

Power comes from a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that will be available in two configurations: the standard 250hp and 260lb-ft of peak torque and the more powerful performance package which adds an extra 25hp for a total of 275hp. Paired to the engine is a close-ratio, short-throw six-speed manual transmission, which is the only option and features a rev-matching function for perfect downshifts.

The powertrain is completed with an active exhaust that pops and bangs when the most aggressive N mode is enabled. There’s also an Electronic Sound Generator that “enhances the natural powertrain sound”.

Hyundai has still to release the official performance figures of the Veloster N, but it did announce its fuel economy: 22 mpg (10.7 lt/100 km) city, 28 mpg (8.4 lt/100 km) highway and 25 mpg (9.4 lt/100 km) combined.

The suspension setup features Hyundai’s “N Power Sense Axle” design, which features a zero-scrub radius for quicker responses, more precise steering inputs and a more direct feel. The electronically controlled suspension reduces dive during hard braking and better roll control when it’s set at its most aggressive setting. There’s also an optional torque-vectoring limited-slip differential.

Customers will be offered a choice between four exterior colors: Ultra Black, Chalk White, Racing Red and the N-exclusive Performance Blue.
