Swimmers have been warned to be careful while in the water after three large sharks were seen snacking on a humpback whale carcass.

The gruesome discovery was made by fishermen on Wednesday, just 4km off the Sunshine Coast.

A video, which was posted to Facebook, shows three large tiger sharks swarm the large mammal as the boat approaches.

Large chunks of the whale's body have been chewed off.

The sharks are seen feasting on the whale's tail.

'Looks like been dead for at least a week, they've eaten about half of it,' fisherman Dan Walsh told 7News.

'The shark has got to feast on something, it's better than humans,' he said.

Swimmers are being urged to only visit patrolled beaches and swim between the flags while the carcass remains in the area.
