Holy smoke! 1.5 ton Diwali sweets go up in flames
TNN | Oct 25, 2018, 00:20 ISTCoimbatore: About 1.5tonne of sweets and savouries prepared for the Diwali festival season were gutted in a fire that broke out at a godown at Savithri Nagar in Selvapuram early Wednesday morning. Fire and rescue service personnel had to struggle for more than an hour to extinguish it.
Confectioner S Elango, who runs a sweetshop near Chetti Street in the city, said he had suffered a loss of Rs 5lakh. “I had been renting the godown for the last two years to prepare sweets and savouries for the festival. I had begun work on October 20 after receiving several orders. On Tuesday, me and my workers had completed the work around 7pm. We put off the stove, cleaned the place, locked the godown and left at 11pm,” a distraught Elango told TOI.
Elango received a call around 4am informing him of the fire. “By the time I reached the place, fire fighters were putting out the fire. About 1.5tonne of sweets and savouries were gutted. I also lost raw materials for making sweets, utensils and furniture.”
Fire spread to an adjacent shop and destroyed goods stored there. A motorcycle parked in front of the godown was also gutted.
An official with the fire and rescue department said that while initially it was surmised that a faulty electrical line could have caused the fire, they were also collecting CCTV footage from the area to investigate the involvement of miscreants. TNN
