On the third day of the strike on Wednesday, with 90 per cent of the Ola and Uber cabs off Mumbai roads, regular users of the app-based cabs in the city faced inconvenience.

Commuters also complained of huge surge in the base fares of the services. Drivers have been demanding an increase in their earnings and rise in minimum fares of cab services. They say that the companies have failed to reach out to them.

Dinesh Nikalje from Maharashtra Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh said: “Companies have not responded to demands. They are asking us to call off the strike but we will not do so till the companies meet our demands.”

Aamna Shaikh, who was trying to book an Uber from Ghatkopar, said that the cab charged two times the base fare. “At an off peak hour, when there was no demand for cabs in the city, I was being charged two times the fare. Why should I pay so much? I did not book the cab and switched to kaali peeli.” She was heading to her office at Fort.

Another commuter Raja Kumar from Santacruz said, “I have been taking the AC local train since the past three days due to the strike. The prices of app-based cabs have become unaffordable.”

In an official statement Uber said: “We regret the disruption caused to our rider and driver-partner community and condemn the use of violence and intimidation by certain individuals. We request the support of law enforcement to enforce the court order and hope that it will enable drivers to stay behind the wheel, something many have been telling us, without fear or harassment.” Ola did not comment on the issue.
