Boat carrying State govt officialscapsizes off Mumbai

A government boat carrying the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, DK Jain and other senior officials and a politician on Wednesday, capsized near Mumbai coast around 4 pm. The Coast Guards and Navy immediately launched a search and rescue operation.

All the boat occupants were saved, except political activist Siddhesh Pawar, who is still missing.

Jain along with other officials was heading towards a small rocky island near the coast, which has been chosen for constructing the memorial for Maratha King Shivaji.

Jain was to participate in the foundation stone laying ceremony at the island, which is also known as Shivaji Smarak.

The Coast Guards received a message at about 4.15 pm that a boat has been capsized near the Shivaji Smarak. The Shivaji Smarak is about 2.6 km from Nariman Point. Speedboats and Helicopters were immediately pressed into service for the rescue operation.

In the aftermath of the accident, the event for laying the stone foundation for Shivaji Smarak was postponed.
