The Kozhikode Vigilance Inquiry Commissioner and Special Judge on Wednesday sentenced a former Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) P. Subramanian to four years of imprisonment and fined ₹22.60 lakh in connection with a case of amassing wealth disproportionate to his known source of income.
Special Judge K.V. Jayakumar also issued a directive to confiscate the illegally acquired wealth of the 67- year-old retired MVI of Feroke, Kozhikode. He had bought 16 cents registered in the benami name of Pullanatt Raveendran and a house located at Feroke. Also, another 22. 5 cents registered in the benami name of Pullanatt Raveendranat at Kondotty in Malappuram district.
The court found that the accused had amassed wealth while he was working as Assistant Motor Vehicle Inspector and Motor Vehicle Inspector in Thrissur from January 1, 1993 to May 25, 2003. The punishment was awarded under Section 13 (1) [criminal misconduct by a public servant] read with 13 ( 2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
A team of the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau led by DySP G. Sabu had seized documents from the rented house of the accused in Thrissur as well as the benami house in Feroke in 2003. If the accused refused to remit the penalty, he will have to undergo additional one more year in prison.
The trial in the case began in 2006. The court examined 135 witnesses and 451 documents. Additional Legal Adviser O. Sasi appeared for the prosecution in the case.
