With an aim to spread awareness about online threats in the cyber space, Delhi police had organised an interactive session called "Cyber Aware" in which around 3,000 students participated from Delhi University and various schools of north Delhi.
The youngsters were educated upon not to fall into the trap of free services claimed to be available on internet. "There is a need to make cyber security an integral part of lifestyle. Many youngsters are falling prey to these social media websites without understanding legal ramifications or consequences," said Pawan Duggal, lawyer on cyber laws.
Delhi Police said that people can report about cyber crime incidents on their online portal www.cybercelldelhi.in
"Children are found to be potential victims of cyber crimes and fake profiles, obscene profiles, obscene emails, obscene messages over social media, acquiring someone else's identity, cheating someone using internet/smart phones etc. are some common cyber crimes. The victims should immediately logout and report the matter to their parents and police, to initiate legal action," said Dr. Anyesh Roy, DCP/Cyber Crime.
The cyber crime cases are usually related to social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube besides fake email IDs, hacking of websites, e-mail accounts, credit card frauds, internet banking, frauds, abusive, defamatory or threatening emails. The Delhi Police had in 2005 formed a cyber cell with the Economic Offences Wing (EOW).
According to the experts, one should avoid downloading of pirated softwares and clicking on dubious links. "People should have secure passwords which should preferably be a kind of shortened statement. Try to avoid downloading of pirated softwares, clicking on dubious links, and using free public wifi, etc. to protect from being held," said Rahul Tyagi, Co-founder, Lucideus (Digital Security).
A short film-"Be Cyber safe" was also screened to aware the students about the cyber security. Amulya Patnaik, Commissioner of Police alos released a booklet on threats in cyber space.
"The cyber crimes have a tendency to leave long term emotional trauma on the victims. We have also set up a strong mechanism at district and police station level, and at centralized Cyber Crime Cell, to combat cyber crime," Patnaik said.
