VARANASI: Banaras Hindu University has asked the university’s sexual harassment committee to inquire into charges of sexual misconduct levelled by some students of the zoology department against one of their professors.

A group of zoology department students were recently on an educational excursion to Puri and Bhubaneswar as part of their course. On their return from the tour, the girls submitted a written complaint to the university administration accusing the professor of making obscene and vulgar remarks during the trip.

“After a brief visit to Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, the professor took us to the Konark sun temple where he unnecessarily tried to explain some stone sculpture,” they alleged adding that when objected to, the professor threatened to deduct from their practical examination marks.

“In class too, he makes offensive remarks that amount to sexual harassment,” they further alleged. Taking serious note of the matter, university administration has asked the sexual harassment committee to investigate. “The women grievance cell is yet to receive a formal complaint, but the departmental sexual harassment committee is looking into it,” said chief proctor and head of BHU’s women grievance cell Royana Singh.
