A grassroots campaign to open an official skatepark in Holyhead has been a success after the town council agreed to fund a £45,000 facility.

Skaters in the town were disappointed in 2014 after the former skatepark was shut due to health and safety concerns.

But despite enthusiasts coming together to construct their own makeshift facility on wasteland near the town’s Home Bargains store, this was also shut this past August after it was discovered that the land belonged to private owners.

They built their own skatepark when only one in town was demolished ... now it's going to be torn down too

But after holding a vote on what facilities residents would like to see built at the town council owned park, councillors have voted to forge ahead with a new skatepark costing approximately £45,000.

In July the park, located on South Stack Road, was officially transferred from Anglesey Council to Holyhead Town Council, ensuring its continued use as a recreational area.

The 10-acre site consists of bowling greens, tennis courts, mini golf course, cycle path, children’s play area, public park and pavilion building.

According to town councillors, it was clear that a new skatepark was the most popular option after a public vote offered an alternative choice of a crazy golf course.

This marks the second similar facility to open this year after a £350,000 urban sports park was officially unveiled in Llangefni.

Cllr Keith Roberts said, “Although we don’t have the funding for a facility like they have in Llangefni, we’re pleased to be able to offer this for the people of Holyhead.

“It will be paid for from town council funds although we hope to attract more outside funding in future in order to carry out more improvements going forward.

“Its hoped that construction will start within a few weeks and it will be based near the existing BMX track.”

Over 1,500 people took part in the online poll, with the skatepark attracting 57% of the vote.

A town council spokesman added, “The skate park has been designed with local input from skaters.

“We are so happy to bring this much needed facility to the Town.”
