JAIPUR: A newborn boy was rescued from a drain near Chorada Square under Jajpur Road police limits on Monday night. Around 10 pm on Monday, the rescuer Rao Babu was in his house when he heard a crying sound and went out. The sound led him to a drain along his house. “Initially, I felt it could be a kitten or a puppy stuck in the drain but on a closer look, I found a child crying his lungs out. The newborn was naked and left in the drain where water was also flowing.”

Babu said the baby was naked and covered with dirt and insects. He washed the boy and cleaned him before informing local police. Police said the baby is believed to be five or six hours old at the time of rescue and is in good condition.

“On being informed, we reached the spot and admitted the baby boy to Area Hospital at Jajpur Road. We are checking with the hospitals in and around Vyas Nagar town for any case of delivery to identify the abandoned child’s parents or who put him in the drain,” said Amitabh Mohapatra, Inspector-in-charge of Jajpur Road police station.

Rao Babu, who runs a commercial organisation, said the baby is under the care of hospital authorities.
A team of Jajpur district Child Protection Unit (CPU) visited the hospital on Tuesday and also asked police to trace the parents of the newborn.

“The infant will remain at the hospital for the time being. The baby is under treatment and is doing fine,” he said, adding that the district administration will bear all his expenses. The CPU is looking into the biological parents of the newborn. The infant will be handed over to his biological parents if traced, he added.
