MUMBAI: One person was killed and two were injured after a boat carrying senior Maharashtra government officers, including the state chief secretary, and at least 40 mediapersons, TV crew capsized on Wednesday off Mumbai coast.

The boat was carrying people for a 'puja' of the proposed Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Memorial in the Arabian Sea off Mumbai on Wednesday.

The incident happened around 4.15 pm when the boat belonging to the Maharashtra government carrying other senior officials, including the Chief Secretary, overturned near the underwater site of the proposed memorial complex, around 3.5 km off Marine Drive.

The Indian Coast Guard, Marine Police and other agencies launched a major rescue maritime and aerial operation with two helicopters and managed to rescue all the people, though one was feared missing, an official said.

The body of a 20-year old political activist, Siddhesh Pawar, was recovered a few hours later from the capsized boat with the hep of Navy divers and fire brigade personnel, said an official of BMC Disaster Control.

Two others injured -- Vikrant Ambre (50) and Ashok Lodha (53) -- were treated at a hospital and later discharged.

The state government has cancelled the planned function.

According to Coast Guard PRO, all affected people in the capsized boat have been rescued.
