Jaguar Land Rover, unions adjourn UK pay talks on Brexit uncertainty

LONDON -- Jaguar Land Rover says it has agreed with unions to adjourn pay talks after a weak recent performance caused by a more difficult market in China, consumer confusion about diesel-emissions regulations and uncertainty sorrounding Brexit.

The company, which is owned by India's Tata Motors, said in a joint statement with unions it would reconvene the talks when it had further clarity on market conditions and the outcome of Brexit.

"We jointly believe that, at this moment in time, this is the most sensible approach and will help to protect both the business and our workforce," JLR said on Tuesday.

JLR joins Nissan, which announced last week that it too has delayed the start of pay talks with its staff in the country until the terms of Brexit become clearer.

UK-based automakers have warned that a no-deal Brexit would have serious implications for the industry in Britain.

Automakers have said a complete break with the bloc on March 29 next year could result in port and motorway hold-ups slowing the movement of components and finished models, crippling output and adding costs.
